Hi all, I'll just put up here 2 videos. The first one is the SNL Jamaica sketch we all watched in section. The second video is one by a Hawaii comedian, Rap Replinger, called "Room Service." They both deal with tourism in a comedic way.
SNL JAMAICA VIDEO (unfortunately can't link it from Youtube/no Youtube video)
This Jamaica sketch (link above) is a Tourism Ad or commercial, calling Jamaica a place where "we just live on tips." As we all discussed in section, like Kincaid, it too draws the viewer in with a somewhat accusatory "you."
This video is Rap Reiplinger's "ROOM SERVICE"
It shows a tourist in a hotel room speaking with a hotel phone operator. The tourist wants a cheeseburger with fries and a milkshake, but the operator blocks him at every turn. Unlike Kincaid or the SNL sketch, this comedy does not directly address the viewer, probably because it wanted to speak to both tourists and local Hawaii people and implicate both of them in this sketch in a different way.
This video is from one of the comedians I'm working on for my dissertation work. Comedy might be one way you could approach "The Dark Side of Tourism." Watch and I'd be excited to know what you think!
